Hardly A Review: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Enjoyable Tosh

Whilst Captain America is an enjoyable film to watch with great set piece action scenes, the film seems to move clunkily between them. Although there is a relatable back story and fairly good depth of character in the main protagonists, it appears as fairly irrelevant to the film maker and is also full of holes which therefore reducing its ability to enhance the film.

The film is set just prior the beginning of WWII and focuses on Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a scrawny kid with heart; who having been rejected from enlisting in the military several times under different guises meets Dr Erskine (Stanly Tucci) who offers him a chance to be considered for a special project. Although physically weak and scrawny; his determination, courage, ingenuity and compassion get him picked for a test of a new process that could enhance him to the maximum of Human physical potential.

The story then focuses on the way in which Captain America, as he becomes known to the public, is used to market war bonds and propaganda to the US population. This hollow achievement of his potential begins to weigh on his conscience and he is spurred into action by the information his friend has been captured. The film then progresses to encompass Captain America’s rise to cult hero and man of action as he progresses to kick Nazi ass through an abundance of action set pieces. The main Enemy is the Boss of HYDRA a deep science division of Hitler's army, known as the red skull or Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving)

Throughout the film there is a loosely explored burgeoning relationship between Steve Rogers a.k.a Captain America and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) which at points looks like it may become a major part of the film but never really does, with it just fizzling out with Captain America becoming we assume entombed in ice and discovered 70 years later. The film ties into the forth coming The Avengers film with the introduction of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) but feels shoehorned in as a necessity to plug and link with the Avengers film.

Whilst I enjoyed the film, I felt it had many issues concerning plot holes and suitable context in which to enhance the action scenes rather than just bumf to fill the intervening time until the next action set piece.

TL; DR: Enjoyable tosh to pass the time with a greater depth to characters than can often be expected in this genre.
