Horrific
Let me begin by clarifying that when I say 'horrific' I
don't mean that the film is awful, I mean that I was mentally disturbed by this
film due to its subject topic and graphic violence. However, it was bloody
brilliant.
Martyrs is an extreme horror/thriller movie from French director
Pascal Laugier telling the story of a twenty-something
year old girl (Lucie) who is out for revenge after being tortured as a child.
Lucie and her friend (Anna) track down the house of the people who tortured her
and it is from this location that the majority of the film takes place.
This film is not for those of the faint of heart, with the use of violence, gore, torture and mutilation being pretty unrelenting. I admit that at one point I may have looked away from the screen (I'm not proud of this but, it happened). Unfortunately though my brain made my head turn and face the screen once more and that's because this film is completely and utterly gripping. While on the one hand I wanted the film to end as soon as possible on the other I was totally captivated by the story and couldn't stop watching to find out what would happen next.
In all honesty, I
can't say that I enjoyed this movie, as I think you'd have to be a bit wrong in
the head to enjoy such graphic scenes, however that does not mean that it is
not a good film. It's an excellent film that leaves you feeling numb afterwards
thinking "what the hell did I just witness". And think about it I
did, mainly because I was too traumatised to sleep.
TL; DR: Brilliant, extremely graphic French horror movie that will have you glued to your seat.
